There is nothing quite as awesome, or as lovable, as a cat on a roomba. I need to get a roomba. We have a lot of cats...

Ian and I were at Mall of Asia yesterday to hang out because it was just too hot and too boring at home (our TV is still dead), and after a nice lunch at Tokyo Cafe, we scanned the activity calendar because we noticed that there seemed to be an unusually high number of otaku-japorms in the area. Of course, it also helped that we saw a guy with blonde dyed hair and plaid pants, with a giant backpack and a KAMEN RIDER helmet under his arm, waiting for a cab. Sure enough, we saw that there was a Tekken Tournament in progress at the time, and we eventually found the poster with the announcement and the tournament details on it.

As it turned out, director of Tekken 6, Mr. Katsuhiro Harada attended the event as one of the judges, and there were also Tekken cosplayers present. Of course, with both Ian and I being fans of the series, we headed for the activity area to have a look-see.

Judges' table

Tournament photos )

Just a short, grainy video that I shot with my phone. ^^;;

I was actually pretty excited to be there, especially since they had a guest like Mr. Harada present. However... the event could have REALLY used a bit more planning than that. It's a BANDAI NAMCO event, for heaven's sake!

Anyway, I suppose my main points of complaints would be:
- the sucky venue. It was outdoors, on a hot, humid, Philippine afternoon, and EVERYONE... contestants, staff, judges, onlookers, us... were all dripping and stinky with sweat. Honestly, couldn't it have been somewhere air-conditioned, at least?

- 4 matches at a time doesn't seem too bad, but I was a little disappointed that only one random match was shown on the video wall. I wish there could have at least been 4 big monitors, or maybe a split screen at least, so that everyone can watch everyone's matches. Some matches that were NOT on the screen were actually pretty awesome, and I think it's a shame that they weren't given due appreciation.

- I felt sorry for the cosplayers, having been asked to just stand behind the judges the ENTIRE time. T_T

- I felt sorry for the judges since they were pretty much stuck in that heat and discomfort. Their only advantage was that they were seated and they weren't being crowded by other people.

- there were these big-ass fans in the area... which blew hot air around. Yep, the day was just THAT hot.

- the event coincided with the annual Level UP! LIVE 2008 event at the World Trade Center. Personally, I would have moved the Tekken event to another date, not just because the LU event is HUGE and would most likely draw everyone there, but also because it would be more convenient for players who want to attend both the LU event and the Tekken tournament. :/

Because of the heat, Ian and I were really starting to get dizzy, so we didn't stick around for very long. We left by the time that contestant 35 or so was being called, and this was just for the first elimination round. We have no idea how long the event lasted, but we're guessing it must have ended by about 5pm or so (which would have meant that everyone was in that area for at least FIVE HOURS???).

Sigh. Oh well. I just hope that the Japanese guests don't get scared off by this experience and refuse to accept future invitations to similar events in Manila. ^_^;;

For the past two days, the only word that has been running over, under, through and sideways in my mind is: GODDAMMITOUCH!

I've been in PAIN for the past 2 days or so, because of a tooth that decided that it would be nice to act up now. The said tooth is at the farthest end of the left side of my upper jaw. I learned via Plurk friends that it's considered a molar, it's a wisdom tooth, and that the worst case scenario is that I may need minor surgery to take the bastard out.

Besides the constant, painful throbbing in my jaw, I can't even close my mouth properly. It's as if the rogue tooth decided to grow half an inch overnight, and I can't rest my upper teeth on my lower teeth because the painful upper tooth is being pushed farther into my gums by the tooth below it. I've also been prodding it with my tongue, and there seems to be a small, smooth lump right beside the bad tooth, on the roof of my mouth. It's tender, and the slightest pressure on it stings. I tried touching the tooth with my finger, and there's something... sharp on it. It's like the tooth is splintered or something.

The other, and possibly the most horrid thing about all this, is that the bad tooth keeps me from enjoying my food, and I absolutely hate it. I like eating, and I like having comfort food whenever I'm stressed. I'm particularly stressed right now, but eating causes me even MORE stress because of the pain.

And yes, in the middle of all this, I still manage to remember the punishment of Tantalus. Not funny.

I'm crossing my fingers that my health insurance covers the procedure, should it be necessary, because I could think of much better and definitely much more pleasant ways to spend my 5000 pesos, than handing it over to a dentist in order to have myself put through more horrors in order to defeat the first horror.

So far, I've been coping by drugging myself silly with mefanemic acid and sleeping a lot. It makes the pain go away, but it also literally leaves an unpleasant taste in my mouth. The effects also wear off in about 4-5 hours or so, so I need to keep popping one because I'd go crazy and bang my head on the nearest cement wall otherwise. I'm also dizzy from oversleeping, so it seems to be a Lose-Lose situation for me. T_T

Stupid me, though, I only decided to see a dentist yesterday afternoon. I woke up late because I forgot to set my alarm, and by the time I got to the MaxiCare office, all the dentists they got hold of were no longer accepting patients because it's almost 5pm. The most I could get is an appointment for today, after I finish work later.

Still 5 hours to go before the time of my dental appointment. In the meantime, lemme leave you with this video which pretty much sums up how I regard dentists in general. Everybody sing with me now: "I'M A DE~~NTIIIIST~~..."

I discovered this movie, thanks to Daryl's Plurks, and I am so glad I did. After all, who'd want to miss 2007's highest-grossing film? In Iceland? :D

Anyway, I love the concept, and it involves a topic which is close to my heart, and I know A LOT, if not ALL of my friends can also relate to. I'm considering calling everyone to our apartment once we've obtained a copy, so that we can watch it all at home, with bowls of popcorn and bottles of soda, just so we can all cringe in unison. You know, good times. Haha!

Now watch the campy glory that is Astropia! XD

Oooh... the very title makes my spine shiver. XD
This is just awesome. It's pretty old, but I just found it now, and I'm pretty wowed by it.

According to the website, realityofnature.com, the following videos "attempt to illustrate the potential Many-Worlds Interpretation of quantum superposition through recorded video games."

"The first video (below) was constructed using the Kaizo Mario hacked ROM version of the Super Nintendo classic Super Mario World. This particular custom level was played 1,000 times and than superimposed on top of one another, giving the impression that Mario’s many possibilities are being realized over and over again."

"The second video uses the exact same premise, this time using the PC game TrackMania. The game was played 1,000 times and than each finished level was superimposed onto the next; the point of the video is the same, but the smooth graphics make this one almost enchanting."

Wow. I think I could actually learn quantum mechanics if everything was explained this way...

And yes, this is me trying to lighten up after that previous post.

I woke up at noon today, which is pretty early for me, considering that I normally sleep at about 7am everyday, since my work ends at 5am. Unable to go back to sleep and trying to figure out what to eat for breakfast, I turned on the TV for some background noise and somehow ended up settling on Al Jazeera which, besides BBC and CNN, actually has a lot of interesting things featured once they finish reporting on political crises, explosions, accidents, scandals and stock market tragedies.

One of their reports stated that the anime Jojo's Bizarre Adventure received flak from the Muslim community for a 3-second shot featuring a baddie flipping through the pages of a Koran, right before he orders a hit on the show's main protagonist. Shueisha was very apologetic about it and pulled out all DVDs that showed the scene, which was very nice of them to do. However, this report also sent thoughts racing through my head, two of which were:

"It was 3-seconds long. How did they find this? A Muslim anime fan? Or do they have a committee that's tasked to watch, read and listen to ALL media ever invented, as they try to find anti-Muslim material? Hmm... that reminds me of some people..."

"Well, you don't hear ANYONE complaining about hentai, though. Nope. Not hentai. Never hentai." XD XD

After that snippet, they also ran a short report on how a local government-run Myanmar TV station has been airing ads, stating that companies like BBC and VOA are "destructionists" and should not be listened to.

Yes, even if you're living in a tent, have to line up for 4 hours for rice and water rations, struggling with disease and have several dead family members from the recent natural disaster that struck your city, you are NOT to believe the white dudes way over there who are telling everyone else that... that... well... that you're living in a tent, that you have to line up for 4 hours for rice and water rations, that you're struggling with disease and that you have several dead family members from the recent natural disaster that struck your city. No, no, no.

Really, that's just silly. T_T;;

Speaking of silliness, though, here's another Al Jazeera feature that was gleaned from the int3rwebs. Japan Binocular Football!! See it to believe! XD XD

And now, back to our scheduled program. And yes, most of my mornings are like this, though I normally get strange, silly news like this from Fox TV and not Al Jazeera. Today may have been an exception.

I've just spent the better part of my days off at my parents' house in Novaliches, only to find that our local pet population has exploded to a whopping SEVENTEEN. Yes, I'm still a little shocked myself.

The roll call is as follows:

1) Lucky the Pitbull
2) Elmo the Lilac Siamese Cat
3) Marbles the Import from Ian's House
4-7) Four kittens, Marbles' litter (yes, they come as a set...)
8) Blu, the local Tom Cat
9) Alpha, the local old Geezer Cat
10) Diablo, the female cat who decided to live with us
11) Pepe Smith, the stray male dog who decided to live with us.
12) Ampi, the stray female dog who decided to live with us.
13-17) Ampi's five puppies

Notice items 10-17. Apparently, these guys just showed up at our house gate one day, all malnourished with nowhere to hide whenever it rains. My dad and mom decided to hand out some food from time to time, and VOILA! They've now become members of the family. And the best part? The dogs and the new cat are all the same color, like matching luggage.

Sigh. It's a little sickening to know that these animals were turned out by their owners who decided it would be cool to have some guard dogs, but then decided to just simply lock the dogs out of their houses when they decided it was too much of a hassle to feed them.

Being the bunch of softies that we are, it's very hard for us to resist taking care of such unfortunate cases. :/

Oh, and as for items 3-7, by the way, Marbles is a cat that we took from Ian's house. My parents love the cats, and they especially love the fact that they're all toilet-trained, mommy-cat AND kittens. The added bonus to this is that Elmo has also finally learned to use the litter box, thanks to Marbles' example. XD

Meet the menagerie! )

More photos at my Multiply Album!

And now, I leave you with a video which shows... er... Marble's kittens attacking a blue plastic bag. ^_^;; (Sorry, I wanted to upload it on YouTube and embed it here, but YouTube took FOREVER to upload the file, so I gave up and added it to Multiply. Anyone know how Multiply vids can be embeded? T_T;;)

This. Cracked. My. Brain.

I was about to leave when I took one last look at YouTube's homepage and saw this gem.

Now, now. Christians and Catholics don't need to take the title too seriously and get offended by it, as no savior-killing or savior-bashing of any kind has occurred in the clip. It just simply shows how a nativity scene can go oh-so-wrong when you cast the wrong people to portray the the Three Magi... and that Mary makes a really bad cleric. XD

I swear. This made my day and made me laugh out loud here in the cafe. Thankfully, there's few of us here in the Internet surfing-only section of the cafe (most of the crowd is in the games section) so I don't have to worry about the strange looks coming my way.

The Nativity. In D20.

Memorable lines:
"Sir Baby Jesus, I bestow upon you this frankincense... OF ETERNAL FLAAAME!! Drawn from the feathers of the Phoenix of Mount Sordon, brewed in the alchemical labyrinth of Elemenstor, the High Overlord of Transmutation, bear this aroma on thy being and forever be impervious to flame attacks below level FOUR!"

"Sir Baby Jesus, I bestow upon you this myrrh...CURIAL SHIELD OF LIGHTNING DEFENSE!!!"

"And.. and I... I bring this gold...-colored GIFT CARD FROM DIGITAL CITY!!!!!!!!

ROTFL!!!!!!! XD XD XD (and yes, I transcribed those lines myself, so I'm not too sure with the names...)

Also, according to the anime-style credits, the skit was produced by Studio Futanari.

Hehe... I know that I haven't updated in a while, and I really should be posting about other things right now... but I can't resist. XD

Oh... and before I get right into that, here's something that made me smile today: a clip of Philip Lee. SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEE~~!! XD XD

Whoever said that 16-bit graphics can no longer wow anyone has got to be kidding. After seeing this video, I have to say that I was completely delighted and impressed by the idea, and if ever a 16-bit game DID come out for Gurren Lagann, there's a very high possibility that I will actually go out and buy it, just because of this clip.

Plus, the MIDI version of the opening theme of the series is pretty impressive, too. XD

On the other hand, there's this other combination that I've been mulling over. It's GURRENN LAGANN + CUTIE HONEY FLASH. I just can't seem to make up my mind about it. Either it's sheer genius, or it's pushing my brain to its limits and my mind will soon snap in half because of it. (Wanna compare it to the actual Cutie Honey opening song?)

ksolaris: (Default)
Well... just a little bit.

Anyway, at this moment, I should be at work, but instead, I'm here at Ian's house at Fairview, typing away. I know it's teetering on the edge of irresponsibility, but screw it, after what happened earlier, there's no way I'm going to the office. No. I'm staying here for today, thank you very much.

Last night (technically about six hours ago) at about 11:30PM, I was getting ready for work when the fire alarm in our building went off. I ignored it for a few moments, thinking that another one of the brats on our floor may have set off the alarm for fun again. I noticed after a while, though, that the alarm wasn't stopping at all, and I could already hear the sound of people's footsteps as they ran in the hallway.

I called Lem out of the shower (he couldn't hear the alarms in the bathroom), and we hurriedly got dressed, and gathered items that came to mind as we prepared to leave our room. Keys. Phones. Camera. Money. Documents. Authographed Neil Gaiman books. So we went down the fire escape, and I was half-hoping that it was a dud, and that we'll just be sent back upstairs the moment we reached the lobby. Unfortunately, I was wrong.

Video taken on our way out of the building:

FIRE IN THE HO---... hallway...? )

Anyhoo, we finally managed to get back into our room by about 1:30 AM, and we spent some time cleaning up the messes we made when we scattered things around in a hurry when the alarm first rang. We also had to put the books back on their shelves, among others. By the time we were done, the adrenaline rush was gone, my muscles in my arms and legs were shaky and I got one hell of a headache. Plus, I needed a bath.

Some things to point out, though:
- Goddammit, I almost left my original Clow Cards behind!
- We left the bulk of Lem's MTG cards!
- I left Yuki and Doro behind! I completely forgot! I'm so sorry~!! T_T
- Lem decided to take from the room... our bills. XD I told him later, "Seriously, you should just let THOSE burn. In fact, make SURE it gets burned." XD XD

We're just ever so thankful to God that no real damage and harm was done. However, we're taking this as a warning, and we really should place some of our valuables elsewhere... and I should start leaving some clothes at my parents' house, too.

I DID mention in my previous entry that Ian and I were off to visit my folks in Novaliches during our day off last week.

There. ^_^;;

PUPPY PILE!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, that's SEVEN frisky little pitbull puppies.
Oooh. I'm melting again... ~_____~

pages peppered with puppy pictures :D )

Even MORE photos at my Multiply album! ^_^

And yes, as if all that wasn't enough... I TOOK A VIDEO OF THE PUPPIES DURING FEEDING TIME! LOOKIE HERE!! XD

The sad part is that we can't really get too attached to the pups since they're for selling. As much as we want to, there's no way we can maintain EIGHT pitbulls all at once, when just Lucky alone is already a handful! ^_^;;

Sigh. Anyone want a pitbull? Just 4.5k, negotiable. We can give them to you in another months' time, once they're fully weaned and they're done with the requisite de-worming and shots.

I'm pimping them on my blog because I honestly think that the people here know how to take proper care of pets, and I'd feel so much more relieved knowing that they go to good people. ^_^;;

Last January 21, Ian and I celebrated our sixth anniversary.

I made a pesto macaroni salad. He brought home a tub of vanilla ice cream. I made strawberry syrup with a batch of strawberries that I bought the day before, and that went in with the ice cream.

Then we turned off the lights, we cradled our mugs with ice cream and syrup, cuddled, and proceeded to watch Tenacious D: Pick of Destiny. XD XD XD

After that, we watched Robert Newman's The History of Oil (<-- YouTube link). Ahhh. British satirical, political humor. Gotta love it. XD

I have also found a new love in the form of Robert Newman. XD

So yeah...

Happy 6th Anniversary, baby. ^________^

I forgot to mention that I finally finished watching Busou Renkin a couple of weeks ago, thanks to the DVD that jylichan left at our place when he dropped by the last time.

I have to admit that the series sort of felt like the result of something that Nobuhiro Watsuki probably doodled on a lazy summer afternoon when he had to submit SOMETHING to his publishers, the main protagonist What's-His-Face was a bit on the forgettable side, and the ending of the anime series felt a little rushed and all. BUT it doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy it, and all thanks to one character in the series: PAPILLON!

I swear, he's so gay, that I love him. XD XD

See for yourself: [YouTube link here]

All I can say is....

... do you really want to pick a fight with a guy who keeps his mask in his thong briefs...? XD

MOTTO AI~~~!!! PA - PI - LLON~~!! * strike a pose!! *

One of my friends from high school has recently introduced me to this song, and the first time that he made me listen to it, it pulled at my heartstrings. In fact, it stirred up so much in me, that it hurt.

Since that moment, days ago, a lot of things have been going through my head. A lot of the questions that I've been trying to put away at the back of my mind suddenly came rushing to the surface before I could even understand what was happening. Before I knew it, my knees were putty, and my chest felt like it was about to explode. My eyes stung, and I only managed to keep it together because I was seated at the time, and someone cracked a joke.

A few hours after that moment, we then attended early morning mass together as a group, and the priest gave a homily about second chances. Again, something stirred in me.

And so I've finally decided that this coming 2008, I'm going to try to defy gravity.

Something has changed within me, Something is not the same
I'm through with playing by the rules Of someone else's game
Too late for second-guessing, Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts, Close my eyes and leap

So if you care to find me, Look to the western sky; As someone told me lately - Ev'ryone deserves the chance to fly... (Lyrics) )

(and all thanks to the glory that is YouTube, by the way...)

It being my day off yesterday, I was intent on just simply vegetating at home, sitting in front of the TV with a bowl of ultra-buttery popcorn. As I was flipping through the channels, I managed to catch the last 10 minutes or so of J-Melo's anime themes special on NHK. I was watching the video for the theme of a Ghibli film, and I was disappointed to find out that the show was already about to end. However, the last video that they played totally blew me away, because there is nothing quite as sexy as an all-girl brass band in short, cute dresses, playing a jazz version of the Dragon Ball Z theme, Makafushigi Adventure. Observe:

I swear, the piano parts for this piece is LOVE! Tokyo Brass Style's homepage can be found at brasta.jp. ^_^

According to ABS-CBN Interactive, as well as the Manila Standard's website, Malu Fernandez has decided to resign.

Okay, that ends there, I think. I'm sure that most people out there have forgiven, and now I wonder how long it will take before it's forgotten... or is this a memory that Fernandez will carry throughout her life, forever itching at the back of her head? Will there be times when she'd lie awake at night wondering what the heck she just did, and replaying event after event in her mind, wondering what she could have done differently? Did it finally hit her that all her name-dropping didn't pay off as none of her so-called friends defended her? Does she have dreams about all this?

Nah. That's just me. I mean, _I_ doubt I'll be able to live with myself when an entire population has banded together and considered me as a common enemy. I don't know about _her_ though. Anyway, I hope that she, at least, learned her lesson.

Now I just wish that I could genuinely feel sorry for her.

Meh. She'd probably just take the next economy flight to somewhere and drown out the experience with more cheap wine. I bet she'll have a new column up in a few months anyway. Plus, I'm guessing that she only did all this because her politician family threatened to disown her since the majority of voters belongs to the demographic that Malu just insulted. Being disowned = she'll have to fly in cargo class and eat at McDonald's the next time she plans to visit another country. :/

(I'm sorry. I just couldn't resist that last bit. I'm still annoyed. I promise to stop now.)

One thing, though... I just wish that people would stop flaunting the whole thing as a "victory of the people". We didn't exactly change the path of the nation or alleviate hunger and poverty, and when I think about it, it seems that we just simply out-bullied a smaller bully who didn't know her place.

But then again, that's just me. It's over, and to be honest, that's the last that I want to hear about the whole thing.

Manila Standard and ABSCBN articles about the resignation. )

TV Patrol news report about Fernandez. Broadcasted August 23 (I think...).

O ayan na. Tama na. Tapos na. Baboo and goodbye. The end.

Yep, the prinnies which used to grace the header for my LJ have finally moved on, and have now been replaced by rascals from FFXII (I can't help it if I've fallen in love with the Ivalice critters). In short, I have a new layout. Yay! It's been a while since I messed about with Photoshop, so I'm pretty happy that my current layout was good enough in Ian's opinion. Hehe... though I did spend many nights and days pestering him in the shower and while he's sleeping to help me come up with a decent color scheme for the whole blog. :D

Anyhoo, fly my prinnies!

akai tsuki akai tsuki
tsumi o okashita monodomo no
kegare o kiyomeru akai tsuki
koyoi wa dare ga umarekawaru
koyoi wa dare ga...

Red moon, red moon...
Cleanses the sinful and makes them anew...
Shining brightly in the night sky,
waiting for the souls...
Who will be born again tonight?
Who will be born again tonight?
Be born again tonight?

Yeah, I've seen the ressurection scenes in both Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, as well as Makai Senki Disgaea, but each time that I do, I just turn to putty and break down into a flood of tears. And when "Akai Tsuki" starts to play, I am then further reduced into a heap of mush. Lolz. I am such a sap. XD

So from then on, I decided that an apt symbol of repentance for me would be a prinny. Thank you and good night.

PS. Just in case you were wondering, yes, we do own a ton of NipponIchi games and that's why we adore the Disgaea universe. We have the first Disgaea, Makai Kingdom and Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories. My personal favorite would be Makai Kingdom if only because Zetta is (in his own words) a badass freakin' overlord!!
